Film and Content Festivals Attract Foreign Productions — Phitsanulok’s Golden Moment for the Entertainment Industry

Phitsanulok is seeing a new vibrancy from a wave of foreign film and content investment. The government reported that in the first half of 2026 Thailand attracted foreign productions worth more than 4,025 million baht, and regional locations like Phitsanulok have become destinations that filmmakers and crews are turning to. The province offers diverse natural scenes, historical sites, and architecture that suit on-location shoots seeking authentic atmospheres rather than studio sets.

Local communities and entertainment businesses in Phitsanulok report that when foreign films or series shoot in the area, temporary direct and indirect employment is created — for ground crews, costume teams, prop makers, and for accommodation, food service, and transportation. A representative of the Phitsanulok Tourism Business Association said that hosting a single production team can generate hundreds of thousands of baht for the local community and also helps promote locations to foreign tourists after screenings or releases.

Beyond the economic benefits, the arrival of foreign productions is an opportunity to exchange skills and knowledge with local personnel. Several acting and filmmaking schools in the province have begun collaborating with foreign directors and producers to organize short workshops that pass on technical filming skills, creating pathways for young people to see careers in the global entertainment industry. Teachers and communication students in Phitsanulok say the opportunity has inspired many and clarified their career direction.

However, accommodating large productions brings management challenges for local authorities. Officials must set standards for location permits, control environmental impacts, and establish clear regulations on the use of public resources — for example, limiting access to sensitive archaeological or natural areas so filming does not damage the integrity of tourist sites. The Fine Arts Department and relevant agencies therefore coordinate with production teams to plan site use tightly.

From the perspective of tourists and local entertainment workers, the rise in foreign productions also represents a chance to create long-term income if the province can convert on-screen images into attractive tourist offerings — such as filming routes, locations that inspired scenes, or experiential activities tourists can try. Small tour operators say they organize special tours to key filming locations and build packages that link to cultural tourism and local cuisine to increase tourism value.

In the long term, Phitsanulok is developing strategies to support sustainable filming destinations, including training local personnel, improving appropriate infrastructure, and promoting public–private cooperation to manage impacts and boost the area’s capacity to receive content investment continuously. If successful, Phitsanulok will not only gain economic benefits but also have the opportunity to build a new image as a regional content-production hub with distinctive, authentically Thai character.
