Water Resources Department warns 8 Chiang Rai villages in red-alert zones — risk of flooding and landslides

On 14 July 2026 the Department of Water Resources issued a warning for areas at risk of flash floods and landslides. It said that of 52 villages monitored nationwide, eight villages in Chiang Rai province are at red-alert level. Local officials and relevant agencies have been coordinating, preparing protective measures, and closely monitoring the situation.

The announcement said the eight villages are scattered across lowland and foothill areas of several districts, which receive runoff from tributary streams and have steep slopes. When heavy rain persists there is a high risk of sudden flash floods and landslides. The Department has sent forecasts of rainfall and water-level fluctuations to municipalities, subdistrict offices, and Civil Defense volunteers, along with guidance on temporary evacuation and securing property.

The impact on residents in the vulnerable areas is apparent. village heads and subdistrict chiefs reported that villagers have begun preparing relief bags, moving important documents to higher ground, and arranging temporary shelters. In some villages located near river channels, residents said they had to stay on alert all night because water rises quickly during heavy rain, and they are concerned about communications if power fails.

Local agencies said urgent measures already underway include opening temporary evacuation centers in safe zones, arranging vehicles and boats to move people who may be cut off from main roads, and deploying medical teams for initial care. They are also inspecting roads and routes that could be severed by flash floods and debris flows to prevent danger and reduce loss of life.

Local academics pointed out this type of event results from multiple factors, including increasingly variable climate conditions, inappropriate land use, and encroachment on forest areas, which have degraded natural drainage systems. They recommended establishing faster warning systems and more detailed risk maps so evacuations and relief can be timely. They also urged watershed restoration and greater cooperation with communities in monitoring.

For tourists, accommodation operators and hotels in Chiang Rai were asked to closely follow official warnings, adjust travel plans and outdoor activities, and cancel or postpone trips if necessary for safety. Some community tourism organizations have advised customers to check with their lodgings and routes, especially for nature trips that involve hiking or mountain routes.

In the long term, officials and community leaders in Chiang Rai agreed it is necessary to strengthen infrastructure, such as building drainage channels, installing landslide barriers, and reforesting vulnerable areas, and to allocate budgets for evacuation drills and public awareness campaigns so communities can better prepare and reduce risks from recurring heavy-rain events.
