Phuket steps up safety inspections of entertainment venues after deadly Bangkok fire

Phuket province has begun strict measures to inspect the safety of restaurants and entertainment venues across the island following a major fire in Bangkok that caused numerous deaths and alarmed both residents and business owners. On July 13, Phuket Governor Chonnarin Kerdsom issued an order for relevant agencies to check safety preparedness, including electrical systems, installation of fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and crowd management within establishments in their areas of responsibility.

The inspections cover restaurants, bars, pubs and event venues—especially enclosed spaces. Officers from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Division, together with public health officials and local municipalities, conducted spot checks at establishments and provided technical advice on improving electrical systems, safe wiring, and installing standard fire alarm systems. In addition to inspections, authorities are giving operators time to make required corrections; failure to comply may result in legal measures and temporary closure orders.

The measures have had both positive effects and raised concerns among local operators. Some owners acknowledged that upgrades will increase costs but are willing to comply because customer and employee safety is important. Smaller businesses, however, worry about the financial burden. Policy support such as technical guidance and access to loans or tax incentives for safety upgrades are being requested from government agencies by business owners.

Tourists view the inspections as a positive sign for travel safety, since Phuket attracts large numbers of both foreign and domestic visitors who enjoy the nightlife. Raising safety standards will help build confidence and prevent unexpected incidents. However, stricter inspections may force some venues to close temporarily for upgrades, reducing certain night-time leisure activities in the short term and potentially affecting the incomes of night workers and related businesses.

Provincial authorities say the inspection plan is an urgent measure that will be carried out continuously and aims to create long-term standards linking operating licenses to safety assessments. There is also a campaign encouraging the public and patrons to report violations or safety defects so officials can take immediate action. Coordination with tourism associations and the private sector will be central to ensuring the measures are effective without unduly harming tourism.

The Bangkok fire served as a stark warning prompting Phuket and other provinces to review safety standards. Although strict enforcement may cause short-term inconvenience, the long-term goal is to protect residents and visitors and to maintain confidence in Phuket as a safe destination for travel and relaxation.
