Ministry Vows to Restore Phuket Beaches, Enforce Rulings and Demolish Illegal Structures

On 14 July 2026, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment announced progress on measures to reclaim public beaches in Phuket Province, saying the ministry will accelerate enforcement of court rulings ordering the demolition of structures that encroach on beaches and public land, and will take legal action to ensure the areas are fully returned for public use.

Beach encroachment in Phuket has long been an issue, linked to past development that allowed private businesses to operate along the coast, the erection of temporary and permanent structures beyond legal boundaries, and conflicts of interest in the management of public space. These incidents have affected beach access for residents and tourists and threatened coastal ecosystems.

In practice, the ministry plans to use legal procedures alongside field operations to survey beach boundaries, prepare restoration plans for affected areas, and regulate unauthorized structures. It will coordinate with local authorities, municipal governments, and stakeholders such as hotel and restaurant operators to seek joint solutions. Because demolitions could affect people’s livelihoods, measures for compensation or occupational assistance for those impacted have been proposed.

Restoring the beaches is not only about reinstating public rights but also about preventing coastal erosion and rehabilitating shore ecosystems, which affects sustainable tourism in Phuket. The ministry says bringing beach management into compliance with the law will build confidence among tourists and investors who want a well-managed environment, and will help reduce long-term conflicts between communities and businesses.

However, implementation is complex: local politics with entrenched networks of interest and the need to preserve community employment mean some demolitions may be delayed or face opposition from business owners. Public participation, the media, and environmental organizations are therefore important for monitoring the transparency of enforcement steps.

If beach restoration succeeds, residents and visitors will gain more public space for recreation, equitable access to the shore, and higher standards for conservation-based tourism. Conversely, affected operators will need support and retraining pathways to avoid sudden economic hardship.
