Tourist boat runs aground on Cha-am–Hua Hin shores, injuring passengers and disrupting morning sailings

On the morning of Saturday, July 18, 2026, a medium-sized tourist boat struck the shoreline along the stretch connecting Cha-am and Hua Hin. Several passengers aboard suffered minor injuries, and the incident caused chaos on the beach at a time when visitors were starting their morning excursions. The accident occurred at about 06:40 while the vessel — operating a sunrise-viewing trip — was approaching the pier after picking up and dropping off guests at hotels in Hua Hin town.

Initial investigations by port officials and rescue teams indicate the tourist boat measured about 12 meters in length and was powered by a single engine. The skipper lost control as the vessel neared shore, driving the bow into a rocky area with submerged boulders. Inspectors found dents to the bow and minor leaks, but no damage threatening the hull’s primary structure. The local captain reported sudden strong winds and a rapid rise in water level, which made handling the boat difficult where waves intersected shallow currents.

Emergency medical and rescue units from Hua Hin Municipality, Hua Hin Police Station, and the Sawang Hua Hin Foundation rushed to the scene to transport the injured to Hua Hin Hospital. Most injuries were scrapes, bruises, and small head wounds. Hospital staff confirmed there were no serious injuries or fatalities. Crew members assisted in evacuating tourists to shore safely.

The incident affected morning vessel operations at the Hua Hin beach pier. Port authorities temporarily suspended departures to assess sea and wind conditions and to repair the damaged beachfront area. Scheduled morning snorkeling and island tours were canceled or delayed, forcing many tourists to wait or switch to other operators. The disruption impacted local tourism businesses and fishermen who share the pier.

The director of the Regional Marine Office, Phetchaburi branch, said a thorough investigation into the cause will be conducted, including summoning the skipper, reviewing the vessel’s documentation, and inspecting its maintenance history. If safety or maintenance shortcomings are found, fines may be imposed and the operator’s license could be suspended pending further action. Hua Hin Municipality also ordered pier operators to install additional safety equipment, such as emergency tethering lines, rapid communication systems, and to conduct regular passenger evacuation drills.

The incident highlights navigational risks along coastlines with submerged rocks and rapidly changing waves, particularly during tidal transitions when many tourists choose early-morning departures to view the sunrise. Strengthening safety measures, pre-departure vessel checks, and providing advance information about weather and currents to passengers can reduce the likelihood of similar incidents. Tour operators are also being urged to align departure schedules with actual sea conditions and to prepare contingency plans to minimize impacts on tourism in Hua Hin, an important local source of income.
