Koh Samui residents complain about reckless speedboat noise, citing impacts on people and marine resources

Coastal communities across several areas of Koh Samui have begun calling on relevant authorities to control speed and navigation of speedboats, after incidents of high speeds and loud vessels entering and leaving shore increased during the past tourist season. The situation has caused concern among residents, fishing operators, and people living by the sea, prompting complaints about safety, noise disturbance, and effects on marine resources.

Many local fishermen say speedboats passing through nearshore fishing grounds have altered fishing patterns. Some fish and marine animals have fled or moved away from their usual areas, leading to reduced catches in certain places. Beyond impacts on fishery resources, high-speed boats have repeatedly produced wake that hits the shore, causing increased erosion on some stretches of beach and raising the risk of damage to fishing gear and floating buoys.

Beachfront residents and leisure-business owners report that late-night speedboat noise disrupts family rest, particularly affecting tourists staying in small resorts or beachfront villas. There are also safety concerns for water-sport participants, such as snorkelers and swimmers, who risk being struck by vessels that may not see people in the water when traveling at high speed. In the past there have been reports of accidents involving tourist boats.

Local officials from the municipality and the provincial port office have convened meetings with community representatives, tour boat companies, and agencies responsible for navigation permits to find solutions. Items discussed include establishing clearly defined navigation channels, imposing speed limits in certain areas—especially near beaches and residential zones—licensing vessels with consideration for noise and emissions standards, and installing warning signs and speed-limit buoys at risky points. Proposals also call for increased water patrols and law enforcement against violators as a deterrent.

The mayor and agency representatives said any solution must balance public safety with the needs of the tourism industry, noting that speedboats are a popular service for island transfers and tourist activities. They suggested training boat operators to meet safety standards and maritime etiquette and producing a guide for tour providers that emphasizes sustainability and protection of marine resources.

Residents and local businesses hope the measures under consideration will be implemented quickly to reduce impacts on their way of life and the community economy. Boat operators also say clear regulations would help ensure fair competition and reassure tourists seeking peaceful stays. Tour operators advise travelers to check routes and schedules in advance and to follow safety rules when using any kind of boat service, so tourism on Koh Samui can balance economic growth with preserving the quality of life of local communities.
