Folk-Concert Festival in Phitsanulok Draws Tourists Through Culture

Phitsanulok province is preparing to hold a contemporary-fused folk music festival, “Siang Nakhon Song Satawat” (Two Centuries of City Sound), from July 24–26, 2026 at the riverside activity plaza along the Nan River. The event aims to promote cultural tourism and stimulate the local economy. Activities include performances by Lanna and Isan folk bands, contemporary sets by well-known indie artists, workshops on making traditional instruments, and a community art market featuring local foods, woven goods and handicrafts.

The festival concept grew from cooperation among the provincial Office of Tourism and Sports, the city municipality and a network of local folk artists seeking to revive the role of traditional music in younger people’s lives. Organizers say they want the festival to be a platform connecting locals with visitors — both Thai and international — who come to Phitsanulok during the high season. In addition to performances, there will be panel discussions on conserving folk songs and on ways to creatively develop traditional knowledge, with a focus on attracting teenagers and university students.

Visitors and participants can choose package tours linked to the province’s major attractions, such as Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan (Wat Luang), Si Thep Historical Park and Chinta Market, combining performing arts with cultural sightseeing. Hotel operators, restaurants and tour businesses agree that events like this help extend the tourism season, bring income to communities and raise the profile of local products.

Local communities play a key role designing the food and products offered at the event. Basket weavers and silversmiths have been invited to set up stalls, and there will be demonstrations of weaving and traditional cooking, including sticky rice with custard, grilled pork and kaeng khae (a northern curry). Organizers emphasize using local ingredients to reduce imports and support provincial farmers. There will also be booths selling products certified by community quality standards so buyers can learn about the origin of goods directly.

Some local folk musicians said performing alongside contemporary artists gives old songs new interpretations, helping younger audiences feel connected and encouraging preservation. Visitors praised the friendly atmosphere and the chance to try short folk-music lessons. Attendance has come not only from residents but also tourists from nearby provinces such as Sukhothai, Loei and Bangkok, with night-show tickets selling out relatively quickly.

Organizers hope the festival’s long-term impacts will include sustainable income distribution, expanded sales channels for local artisans and the creation of a cultural identity for Phitsanulok as a place that links history with contemporary art. This would position the province as a cultural destination — not only for ancient temples but also for lively artistic activity. The provincial tourism office plans to develop the festival into an annual event and is seeking private-sector support to expand activities in future years.
