Nan Riverside Arts Festival in Phitsanulok Combines Traditional and Modern Music to Attract Rainy-Season Tourists

The Nan Riverside Cultural Arts Festival in Phitsanulok for 2026 opened last weekend at Tha Pho Plaza and the riverside walking street. The event brought together Lanna–Sukhothai folk music, contemporary performances, and local performing arts enhanced with digital technology to add visual flair and draw younger visitors to Phitsanulok’s old town during the rainy season.

The festival was organized through a collaboration between the Provincial Office of Tourism and Sports, Phitsanulok Municipality, the Tourism Business Association, and local artist groups. Activities ranged from folk music and temple play performances to light shows and interactive projection mapping on historic building walls, as well as workshops on basket weaving and crafts using materials sourced from riverside communities. A local food market featured Phitsanulok specialties such as khao kriap wao (crispy rice crackers), khanom chin tai pla (rice noodles with fermented fish sauce), and freshwater fish dishes from the Nan River.

The highlight was the concert “Nan Sound Melody,” which paired contemporary luk thung (Thai country) artists from Bangkok with local folk bands. Audiences praised the blend of modern sounds with traditional instruments like the phin and khene. Both Thai and foreign tourists attended the performances, which provided entertainment and served as a cultural exchange platform for local youth.

The director of the Provincial Office of Tourism and Sports said the festival aims not only to revive the city’s economy but also to distribute income to riverside communities, especially small businesses hit by the tourism low season. The rainy-season scheduling was planned with weather forecasts in mind, and the event includes tents and covered activity areas to allow programming to continue in wet weather and reduce the risk of cancellations.

Local residents and business owners in Phitsanulok’s historic district said the arts festival brought new life to the riverfront and gave the community a chance to showcase handicrafts and local cuisine. Prateep, a local restaurant owner, reported sales increases of about 30–40% compared with the previous month. Several guesthouse owners also saw booking increases, particularly from travelers arriving by train and bus from nearby provinces.

Although the festival created a lively atmosphere, organizers emphasized sustainable practices such as reducing single-use plastics, providing segregated waste bins, and using eco-friendly materials. A team of local volunteers provided visitor information and helped maintain order. The festival’s goal is to promote Phitsanulok as a distinctive cultural destination by using art and performance as a bridge between the past and the present.
