Gas tanker truck overturns on Phitsanulok–Sukhothai highway; 1 dead, several injured — Provincial governor orders transport safety checks

In the early hours of July 20, 2026, near dawn, highway police and rescue teams in Phitsanulok province inspected the scene after a large gas tanker truck overturned on the main highway between Mueang Phitsanulok District and Wang Thong District. The crash occurred at a downhill curve near a rest area, leaving one person dead, several injured, and causing traffic congestion for several kilometers that required a temporary detour.

According to rescue personnel, the incident happened after the gas truck, carrying numerous pressurized gas cylinders, lost control while descending a steep slope. The truck struck a guardrail and rolled onto its side. A gas odor spread through the air, injuring the driver and passengers in the truck. At the same time, several private cars following behind had to brake suddenly, causing a series of minor rear-end collisions. Authorities had to control traffic and close lanes so gas teams and the hazardous-chemicals unit could operate.

The deceased was a middle-aged man who was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries and toxic exposure. Six to eight others are being treated in the emergency room of a nearby community hospital; some sustained minor burn injuries and smoke inhalation. Firefighters worked for several hours to reduce the risk of gas leakage and to control flames around the cargo tanks. Authorities also coordinated with the provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM) and the chemical-hazard response unit to inspect the scene.

The Phitsanulok governor visited the site and ordered relevant agencies to promptly assist those affected and to coordinate a safety inspection of hazardous-material transport in the area. Measures include checking transport documentation, inspecting the truck’s tires and braking systems, and reviewing speed-limit measures on high-risk stretches. The governor also ordered additional warning signs for dangerous curves and the installation of speed-reduction warning systems at the crash site.

The incident has alarmed local residents and road users because the route is an important connector between districts and frequently carries hazardous goods. Local transport companies have been called in for inspections of loading standards and driver training. Local business owners are urging stricter enforcement to prevent recurrence. Tourists using the route to reach attractions in lower-lying parts of the province reported that many trips were delayed or rerouted, causing short-term disruption to destination tourism.

Traffic authorities said the road should be fully reopened within 24–48 hours, pending cleanup, vehicle removal, and repair of the guardrail. Travelers are advised to avoid the area until an official reopening is announced. The incident underscores the importance of enforcing hazardous-material transport regulations and improving infrastructure to enable safer transport and reduce risks to life and property on the highways.
