Prime Minister visits Chonburi to console relatives of Russian sibling pair; vows full investigation

On 2 August 2026, General Anutin Charnvirakul, the Prime Minister, traveled to Chonburi province to follow up on the deaths of a pair of Russian siblings whose bodies were found in Bang Lamung district near Pattaya. He met with and offered condolences to the victims’ family, apologized on behalf of the government, and affirmed that the authorities will ensure justice and pursue the investigation to the fullest extent.

The incident came to light after missing-person reports were filed for two Russian tourists late last month. Police later discovered both bodies buried at the same site in Chonburi, prompting intensive investigations by the relevant agencies, including the Chonburi provincial police, tourist police, and forensic units.

In a brief meeting, General Anutin said such incidents should not happen to tourists visiting Thailand and apologized to the bereaved family in the name of the government. He instructed the police and related agencies to pursue the case transparently and to provide full consular assistance and coordination with the victims’ family abroad.

According to investigators’ reports, several people of interest have been identified, and prosecutors requested the court to authorize detention for additional suspects. The local court has reviewed some requests and denied bail for several defendants, citing the serious nature of the case and the risk of flight. The court’s decisions have increased tensions in the community and among tourism operators because the case affects the area’s tourism image.

The impact on local residents and tourism businesses in Pattaya and neighboring areas is evident: restaurants, hotels, and service businesses are facing concerns about a possible drop in foreign visitors, particularly from Europe and Russia, during what is normally a busy season. Government and private-sector actors must work together to restore confidence by enhancing safety measures, communicating information transparently, and coordinating with foreign consulates to provide travel information and necessary assistance.

Security forces have stepped up patrols in Pattaya’s main tourist areas and set up emergency information points to assist visitors. Meanwhile, local residents near the crime scene remain unsettled and many have called on authorities to increase community protections, such as installing lighting, boosting patrols, and coordinating with community committees for timely information.

As the investigation continues, General Anutin promised the government will closely monitor developments and use lessons from the case to improve safety measures and tourist protection, both in terms of law enforcement and prevention, to help prevent similar traumatic incidents in the future. For the victims’ family, the government and related agencies continue to provide consular assistance and health coordination, and are preparing documentation and repatriation arrangements in accordance with the family’s wishes.
