Hua Hin Water Supply Upgrade Plan to Quickly Address Shortages and Inconsistent Quality

The National Water Resources Office, together with Hua Hin Municipality, has unveiled a local water supply improvement project to tackle water shortages during the dry season and periods of inconsistent water quality. The project, worth more than 120 million baht, covers expansion of water mains, upgrades to water production stations, and installation of new filtration systems at two main sources in the district. Work is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and to be completed within 18 months.

The water supply problems in Hua Hin stem from multiple factors, including urban growth and an increase in hotels and resorts that draw large numbers of tourists during the high season, driving up water demand rapidly. In some areas farther from the main pipe network, residents face intermittent low pressure or shortages. Complaints have also been received from residents and business operators about cloudy water and unpleasant odors, which have affected the area’s tourism image.

The project includes laying additional large-diameter pipes to increase system pressure and capacity, which will provide more reliable water to suburban communities and coastal villages. At the same time, treatment plants and filtration systems will be upgraded to meet standards set by the National Water Resources Office. Multiple real-time water quality monitoring stations will be installed so authorities can respond more quickly to anomalies. Officials said the project also emphasizes efficient water use, such as promoting measures to reduce system losses and installing smart water meters in areas with high leakage.

The positive impacts for residents and the tourism sector are clear. If the project proceeds as planned, it will reduce water shortages in the summer, allowing hotel operators to plan services more reliably. Improving water quality will boost tourists’ confidence and reduce public health risks. Beachside communities that rely on piped water for agricultural and fishing activities will benefit from a more stable water supply.

Although the project has been welcomed, some residents have expressed concerns about construction impacts, such as road excavations and traffic disruptions. Municipal officials said construction will be phased to minimize disruption to daily life and tourism, and an environmental monitoring team will be set up to control dust and noise. Community consultation forums will be held before work begins in each phase to ensure transparency and address local needs.

The plan is also part of Hua Hin’s long-term water resource management strategy and aligns with regional policies emphasizing sustainability and water self-sufficiency. This investment is therefore not only a short-term fix but a foundation for supporting the town’s future growth. Local authorities urged residents to cooperate by conserving water and maintaining household pipe systems so the project delivers maximum benefits for the community and visitors to Hua Hin.
