Surat Thani Governor Seeks Visa Revocation and Investigation After Palestinian Flag Incident on Koh Samui

On August 2, 2026, Surat Thani provincial officials filed a complaint to request visa revocation and removal from the kingdom for two men following an altercation on Koh Samui. The accused are an Israeli national and a French national. The incident occurred late last week during a dispute over displaying or carrying a Palestinian flag in a public area of the island, which led to a confrontation and a local police report.

Pol. Gen. Thitipong Inwasa, Deputy Director of the Surat Thani Internal Security Operations Center, said authorities are compiling full evidence to submit to immigration officials for consideration of visa revocation and, if warranted, deportation. He noted that incidents involving foreign political flags and symbols could affect public order in tourist areas such as Koh Samui, which attracts many foreigners and visitors year-round.

According to reports, the incident began with an argument about displaying a Palestinian flag in a public space at a popular tourist spot on the island, which made some bystanders uncomfortable because Koh Samui is culturally diverse and frequented by tourists of many nationalities. In addition to verbal exchanges, the event was recorded and circulated on social media, escalating public attention among both residents and visitors.

Local authorities have summoned the people involved for questioning to understand the context of their actions and to determine whether any Thai laws were violated, including charges related to causing public disorder or acts that could incite division in public spaces. At the same time, immigration law will be considered to establish the type of visas held by the accused and whether they meet the criteria for revocation.

Koh Samui residents and tourism operators expressed concern about the incident, saying it could harm the island’s image and short-term sense of safety for tourists. Shop owners, hoteliers, and local guides pointed out that Koh Samui is known as a peaceful getaway; widely publicized political incidents or conflicts could prompt some travelers to postpone trips or choose other destinations.

Beyond legal measures, local officials emphasized preventive steps to avoid escalation within the community, coordinating with tourism agencies, local authorities, and tourist police to enhance public order in common areas, increase patrols, and provide guidance to businesses on handling emergencies involving foreign visitors. Those involved must still await the official investigation results and immigration authorities’ decision on whether visas will be revoked. Koh Samui residents continue to watch the situation closely because of its potential impact on the island’s tourism economy and community well-being.
