Phuket Prepares for New Flights to Boost Trade, Investment and Tourism
The Airports of Thailand (AOT) is strengthening international connectivity by partnering with Vietnam Airlines and flydubai to open new routes to Phuket and Bangkok. This expansion of the air network aims to stimulate tourism, trade and investment in Thailand’s southern region — not only increasing passenger numbers but also creating broader economic opportunities.
Phuket is a popular island destination with infrastructure that supports visitors from many countries. Direct routes from Vietnam and the Middle East are expected to attract new visitor segments, including families, business travelers and premium tourists who typically spend more than average visitors. More flights will also help local businesses expand exports of OTOP products and fresh seafood to overseas markets and build business partnerships between local operators and foreign investors.
Employment and local income are other expected benefits. Additional flights will drive demand for service-sector workers such as reception staff, hotel employees, local guides and transportation providers. Construction and maintenance work on airport infrastructure and tourist facilities will also create jobs. Local authorities expect improved air links to spur investment in commercial real estate and venues for conferences and events.
Despite the positive outlook, adding flights presents resource-management challenges such as environmental protection, water and waste management, and traffic on the island. Phuket has previously struggled to accommodate excess visitors during high season, prompting public and private sectors to collaborate on measures to control negative impacts — for example, promoting eco-tourism, developing alternative travel routes and distributing tourists to rural areas with potential in order to spread income and ease pressure on basic resources.
At the policy level, AOT says it will coordinate with local agencies including the provincial tourism and sports office, airport operators and security agencies to tightly plan for the new flights. This includes airport facilities, development of connecting transport systems and promotion of multilingual service standards to meet the needs of diverse international visitors. The private sector is also urged to develop quality tourism products and foster cooperation among operators to offer a variety of sustainable packages.
For Phuket residents and local businesses, the new routes present an opportunity to recover income after economic setbacks, but preparations must start now. Training in languages and service skills for workers, improving local transport systems and putting environmental measures in place will help ensure the benefits of increased connectivity reach communities. If network expansion is accompanied by good management, Phuket has the potential to elevate itself from a tourist destination to a regional center for trade and services in the long term.
