Speedboat Hits Rocks Near Koh Samui; Passengers Injured, Tourism Affected

In the early morning of August 5, 2016, a speedboat carrying tourists struck submerged rocks in a coral reef area near Koh Matsumun, Bophut Subdistrict, Ko Samui District, Surat Thani Province. The incident injured several Thai and foreign tourists. rescue teams and the marine police rushed to the scene and transported the injured to the island’s hospital immediately.

According to rescue officials, the accident occurred at about 06:20 while a mid-sized speedboat carrying roughly 18 tourists was returning from a snorkeling and reef tour. Although sea conditions were relatively calm, the boat struck an underwater rock formation along the reef, causing a long gash along the hull. Some passengers were injured by the impact and by slipping and abrasions. Officials found 11 injured people in total; three were seriously hurt but not in critical condition. They were taken to Ko Samui Hospital, and those requiring more advanced care were later transferred to better-equipped hospitals on the mainland.

The captain and crew said they followed safety standards and had provided life jackets to passengers before departure. The captain suggested visibility of the underwater rock may have been obscured by light reflection and unusually turbid water. Marine police have not concluded the cause and are investigating the vessel’s condition, navigational equipment, and the possibility of excessive speed. They have also checked the tour operator’s permits and insurance.

The incident alarmed the island’s fishing community and tourism operators, coming in a minor high season ahead of the busier travel months. Dive-boat and sea-trip operators fear it will undermine tourist confidence, especially among foreigners interested in marine and nature activities. Ms. Somwang, a tour guide, said that although such accidents are infrequent, reports like this often prompt customers to postpone or cancel trips until there are clear safety assurances.

Relevant agencies — the Surat Thani Provincial Office of Tourism and Sports, the marine police, and the Marine and Coastal Resources Management Office (MCR) — called an urgent meeting to assess the situation and set additional preventive measures. Proposed actions include surveying reefs and submerged rocks to create warning maps, improving maritime navigational markers, increasing vessel inspections and navigation training for captains and crews, and enforcing speed limits in high-risk areas.

Local tourism businesses urged authorities to tighten safety inspections for all passenger vessels and asked tour companies to be transparent with tourists about routes, risks, and emergency procedures. Tourists, they added, should check provider reviews and reliability, wear life jackets at all times, and follow crew instructions to reduce danger at sea.

Officials are surveying the damaged boat to collect evidence for legal proceedings and will summon the boat’s owner to cover repair costs and medical expenses for the injured. If negligence or violations of maritime law are found, authorities will pursue legal action. The Koh Samui community is closely monitoring the response because maritime safety is central to the island’s tourism-based economy.
