Last night around 10:15pm my boss told me to help load a delivery truck for another department, even though I’m a front desk receptionist.
Like... I had to lift boxes of water—those big plastic bottles that take two hands—and carry laundry bags that were all stained with sauce. And meanwhile phones kept ringing with room reservations so I had to answer those too. I was doing both for almost 1 hour 20 minutes.
The boss just came over all casual and said “help out tonight, we’re short” and then went off to do his own work. I had to smile and just do it, smiling with my hands full. I’m 34, I’ve worked at this Pattaya hotel for almost six years, I’m not an intern.
I’m exhausted. My back hurts. I’m so confused.
Guests were checking in and looking at me like, why is the front desk person loading guests’ stuff? Like they were silently judging. Some coworkers helped, but others just stood there holding coffee bags and did nothing. I was half angry, half laughing. Felt like I was left to do everything even though our roles are clear.
I wanted to ask about compensation or switch shifts, but when I mentioned it they gave me this look like, “and?” so I shut up because I didn’t want it to blow up. hahaha
What should I do, guys? Anyone else been through this? Should I have said something right when the boss told me, or save it to talk about in the morning so it doesn’t escalate—but I’m also scared it’ll turn into a bigger deal T_T
