I just got out of a meeting and I'm still so shaken I can't hold it together.
It happened right in the middle of the meeting. We were wrapping up this month's numbers and my boss suddenly turned and said, “The reports are late, the company got fined,” and pointed at me like everyone would automatically believe it. Dead silent.
I'm in accounting, been doing this about 8 years, based in Korat, I'm 35. I handle payroll, VAT, monthly closings — all the number stuff. It's a small company near the industrial park, but anything to do with figures needs crazy attention to detail. It's not easy work at all.
The thing is, this month the purchasing team’s paperwork really was late — especially the invoice from a regular supplier who delivered almost two weeks late. I chased them, sent reminder emails, logged everything with times and contact names, even saved a red-folder file stamped Apr 12 at 22:40. But in the meeting my boss acted like they hadn’t seen any of the docs I attached and said, “If you worked faster, this wouldn’t have happened.” People around murmured and everyone stared at me. I was floored.
Honestly, before the meeting I’d stayed past midnight like three times (around 23:30–00:30 most nights) putting the files together, because some had to be reordered to fit the system. I scanned docs on site at 4pm with shaking hands, fiddled with a blue pen on the desk for about an hour to get them right. But in the meeting my boss didn’t mention any of that, just blamed me for being slow and made me the one responsible even though it’s a multi-department process. Or am I overthinking it?
After the meeting my boss sent one line on LINE: “Noted.” No explanation, no apology, no asking what problems I had. I replied that I’d already sent these documents and would save the files for them to review, then they read it and didn’t reply. So now I’m just left hanging in the air lolol but it’s not funny at all T_T
Some coworkers asked me later, “Did the boss really say that?” Some acted like they didn’t know anything, others avoided eye contact and looked weird around me. I feel so off because I never hide anything. I admit I’m super stressed — I thought this would be handled quietly, within the team, not thrown on me like that.
Part of me thinks my boss might be under pressure from higher-ups and needed someone to blame, but I don’t want to be the outlet for someone else’s mood. I’m not that stupid — I have my limits — but I also don’t want a big confrontation because I have to keep working here long-term, not just a couple days.
Also a petty thing that made me more annoyed: my boss pulled me aside almost midnight and asked me to finish the report by this weekend, even though I already paid for an online course on Saturday. He said it was “very important.” Then the next morning I saw him post a chill story of him hanging out with friends. Like... that stung. How do they pick standards?
I don’t want enemies because I need to keep working with people, but I also don’t want to be taken advantage of or look bad in front of coworkers without a chance to explain. I’ve saved all the evidence. Part of me wants to call a meeting to clear things up, but I’m afraid people will say I’m the one stirring trouble or my boss will call me arrogant or something. Am I making a big deal out of nothing?
Right now I'm thinking two options: 1) gather the emails and timestamped docs and ask for a formal private talk with my boss; or 2) let it go and focus on work because I don't want this blowing up at the office. But if I let it go, it feels like accepting blame when I didn’t do anything wrong, and that’s awful.
Anyone in accounting or who’s been through this — what happened to you and how did you handle it? What should I do? Or should I just find a new job? Borrowed a friend’s login to post so I could hear different views. Sorry if this is messy, I'm totally frazzled.
My boss called me 'slow' in front of everyone even though I worked super late — what should I do?
