I was changing the last patient’s dressing when my phone rang right on the bedside. My boss told me to come handle an emergency case that just popped up in the system. Wanted me to go alone because the other night nurse had just been sent to help in the ER. My boss didn’t say anything else except “please help” and then hung up. Dead silent.
This isn’t the first time it’s happened, but tonight felt worse because I’d just started my shift and had almost finished dinner, already tired from home. There are several follow-up cases among the elderly patients in the ward, so I had to decide in the middle of the night whether to leave this patient or go where my boss asked. If I go, the rest of the ward will really struggle. If I stay, the patient I’m caring for could be at risk. I felt shoved into choosing between two bad outcomes. So stressed.
Just venting — I’m 38, been working here almost ten years. Been through lots of heavy stuff, but this habit of dumping work without coordinating is really damaging the system and the team. Sometimes my boss will assign someone to cover another unit’s case without asking the team first, and then act like “it’s no problem,” as if it doesn’t affect everyone else. It’s not that I want to make trouble, but it’s just too much to keep biting my tongue. Maybe I’m being petty. Or overthinking.
Some coworkers say it’s just hospital life and we have to be flexible. But flexibility that turns into being taken advantage of is too much. I don’t want to blow things up, but if this keeps happening who wants the night shifts? Who wants more responsibility? To be honest, motivation disappears. Nursing needs teamwork, but teamwork also needs boundaries. Not having the same few people constantly pushed into doing everything all the time.
Last night there was also a coordination fail that made us wait in the rest room for half an hour because nobody came to relieve us, even though the boss knew and didn’t tell anyone because they thought they could handle it. How is anyone supposed to prepare for that? After almost ten years I still find myself surprised at how much more I can take.
Sometimes I want to have a serious talk with my boss, but I’m worried about the atmosphere getting tense and the effects on colleagues. A small voice like mine can become a big deal. So confused, really confused lol :’(
Anyone on this forum dealt with this? I want ways to talk to my boss without arguing, but how do I get them to understand that the little things they think don’t matter actually impact the whole team? What should I do?
P.S. If anyone’s going to say quit — let me think first. It’s not that easy; I’ve got people at home and responsibilities. I’d rather fix the system, but I don’t know where to start.
So drained — support keeps dumping work on us late at night
