I've been a nurse for two years (I'm 22) working in Korat.
Okay... sneaking away from my supervisor to make this thread, I'll finish this later when I go back 555
Last night, around 3 AM, I really needed to vent. I'm so exhausted from the night-shift head nurse always dumping stuff on me that the new nurse messed up sometimes — or got right sometimes — and making me fix it every time, even though I'm still learning night work too. I'm always the one on the urgent jobs alone. I have to handle emergency cases by myself, and by the time I find a doctor I'm already boiling inside. I have to check heart signals, take blood pressure, do CPR and stuff alone. My heart almost gives out. Sometimes I just lean on the desk and stare at the pen in my pocket like... I wanna cry but I can't.
Lots of things piled up and now I'm overthinking, like:
- If a nurse who's been there years makes a mistake, the boss lets it slide. But when I fix things and make it go smoothly so the patient is okay, later I'm called in and told I did something wrong. Like, what?
- The boss likes to pair me with the slow new nurse, even though I'm still new. She says training them is part of my skills, but never compliments me when I do well. If something goes wrong she brings me up to practice in front of everyone and teases me like it's a joke but it really hurts.
- At short shift meetings, the boss jokes that if you can't handle it, just quit. Funny, right? Not funny for someone paying a mortgage, a car loan, and all the small payments.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm too sensitive because some coworkers tell me not to think so much. But I feel like this pattern's been repeating for months — the last 3–4 months it's gotten worse. I'm so stressed I can't eat, I can't sleep, I jolt awake 4–5 times a week, and I'm scared I'll make mistakes from the stress. It's a vicious loop.
I want to change jobs, but night nursing jobs aren't as easy to find as people think. There are patients who need continuity and I'd feel guilty leaving them halfway. Also family plans aren't ready to move far, I'm still paying installments. Everything's clashing and sometimes I want to scream, but I still have to smile at work.
I've thought about talking seriously with the boss but I'm afraid of being seen as troublemaking or of the comeback "if you don't like it then quit" so I've stayed quiet. Now I want ways to manage work stress and want to know if being direct would help or if I should start looking for a new place first.
Or am I just narrow-minded, or is it normal in nursing to have to tolerate more than others? Do other nurses or night workers get this a lot? Please share coping tips or advice. What should I do? I'm so confused T_T
P.S. If anyone has sharp lines to use when talking to an unfair boss, please share. I'll write them down in a little notebook and actually use them lol
So confused about work — should I put up with it or quit?
