I've been working 12 years now, but things still keep getting me down.
I'm a 35-year-old accountant, renting a place near Bang Bua Thong in Nonthaburi. I work at a small startup around Rama 2. I only go into the office two days in a row since we're still hybrid, but the real problem is the boss and the team vibe more than the systems.
Short version first. Our boss talks a lot—he's great with the mic—but when it comes to the nitty-gritty of accounting... hmm, I don't really want to call him good. He likes to hand out tasks late in the morning and then disappear to meet clients or sit in long meetings, like gone the whole day. When we send files or ask for small details he replies with short answers and doesn't say clearly what to change, like "You handle it." End of story. When we ask he's vague, when he answers it's unclear.
Accounting is detail-oriented. If you miss little tax stuff it matters, but I'm the one who has to fix it. I put together concise reports for management, give them numbers to present, and if there's a heavy question it usually gets tossed back at me: "Go talk to the relevant department yourself," with no backup docs or explanatory emails sent. So I have to run around asking purchasing, some clients almost forget to send invoices, I'm chasing them down until I'm drinking a dented paper cup of coffee from a vending machine at five-thirty a.m. just to get things cleared for the execs before the meeting.
Sometimes the boss drops new burdens that aren't part of accounting, like handling employee benefits, even though the accounting workload is already overflowing. When I ask for more time during closing he says okay, but when it comes he keeps adding tasks. I can't keep up. Seriously, I can't.
Team mates are all kinds. Some work quietly and well, but others only help with stuff they like and when mistakes happen they send a short email blaming another team and never share responsibility. Another one scrolls Facebook during work but says, "Waiting for the email," even though the info is in a folder they can access—they just won't look. Responsibility's hard to find where I work.
Why don't I quit? I'm looking, but I'm holding on because the basic benefits are okay, the group insurance is good, and the office isn't far from home. If something urgent comes up I can get home easily. The ERP we use matches my skills—I'm into making reconciliations perfect—but this kind of management is draining. Or maybe I'm just being picky. Maybe.
Last night I barely slept. I decided I should have a serious talk with the boss once, because the "assign and vanish" behavior has been going on forever and it affects the team's credibility with management. But when I think about talking I'm scared my voice won't reach him, or he'll think I'm being difficult. Also he likes to say things that make you feel guilty when you bring things up, like "Work faster, don't make other teams wait," but he never tells you how or gives tools. It's so frustrating. Really.
There are small things building up too, like him sending a LINE message at 11:30 p.m. telling me to clear a report for the next morning. I replied that I'll check early because I'm closing the books, and he said, "If you don't do it, I'll handle it myself." That tone makes me feel pressured, even though I have real limits, not that I don't want to do it. Time is a resource. I'm really tired. Ha ha ha.
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I spoke up directly. Would they see me as a troublemaker? Would they reassign my tasks to someone else? Or would nothing change and the working relationship break? I don't want to create problems, but if I leave it be it feels like being treated unfairly.
Accountants or anyone who's had a boss like this, what did you do? Should I have a direct talk with a written brief? Or are there techniques to slowly change team communication without wrecking relationships? Am I overthinking or just narrow-minded?
OP really wants advice. Should I keep trying to adapt, or is it time to change jobs? So confused T_T
P.S. If I were to write a short email asking for an official meeting, how should I word it so it doesn't sound like I'm ordering him around? Please give a concise suggestion.
