Guys, help me decide — should I grit my teeth or start looking for another job? I'm honestly confused.
I'm 38, been working at a small hotel in Phuket near the beach for about 8 years. My usual job is guest shuttle staff — pick up/drop off guests, help at the front desk morning–afternoon. Sometimes I check in foreign guests or Thai guests, I know the system, I know the parking spots, I know where the spare keys are (usually in a small drawer with a yellow sticker). But for the past two months the boss has been swapping roles all the time and it's driving me nuts.
I wake up at 5:30am, get the van ready, start pickups at 6:30 — the schedule is clear. But when I get to work the boss walks up and says, “Today help the kitchen, wash dishes first, the cook’s running late.” Fine, I can do it; it's not my regular duty but I help. But then half the morning the kitchen is a mess, and in the afternoon I have to be back at the front desk checking people in, then at night I'm driving to pick up/drop off at the airport again — it's like I'm forced to do every role. Morning I'm the driver, afternoon I'm reception, some days I even fix a light or two. Headache central.
It's so quiet. So confusing.
Yesterday was the worst. Boss told me to deep-clean 10 rooms before noon because a group arrives at 1pm. I worked about three straight hours, then in the afternoon he told me to key bookings into the computer: “Don’t worry, I’ll sort the schedule.” I finished that and there was no schedule — just more time moved around so I had to keep working without a break. My lunch break vanished. Feels like zero planning.
It keeps happening — last-minute reassignments — but my salary is the same. No OT, no compensation. When I try to talk about needing a break or clarifying my duties they say, “Just help out, won’t be long,” all friendly tone, but I get tense. Can I keep doing this? If it keeps up for a month or two my body will definitely start yelling at me.
I keep thinking maybe I’m overthinking, or small hotels have to be flexible like this. But younger coworkers are starting to complain more too. Expectations are dumped on the people who’ve always done one job. I want a clear duty roster, or at least compensation if we’re expected to cover multiple roles. Should I talk directly to the boss about breaks and job boundaries, or would that come off as being difficult?
I’m probably too soft-hearted. Maybe I’m overreacting.
But if this keeps up, I’ll have to consider finding another job because my body’s already saying it can’t keep going like this.
Anyone who's had a boss who can't schedule properly or dealt with this kind of situation — what did you do? Talk to the boss and get duties written down, or wait until something big happens and then quit? What should I do T_T hahahaha
Should I quit? Boss keeps switching my shifts and says 'help out' but there's no OT
