So I came in early to work like usual, around 7:00. Washed my face, chucked coffee into a small plastic cup and ran into the office. Turned on my computer and bam, drama.
Yesterday I stayed late finishing the quarterly summary report for the team because the boss reviewed it and asked to tighten up the numbers and wording. I was almost done and sent it to the boss around 10:15 PM in the work chat (I typed that I’d get the signature in the morning). But this morning the boss calls an urgent meeting and says, “Redo everything and send to the client by noon today.” Wait, noon today? For real?
No warning, no job queue, no heads-up at all. I opened the file at 7 AM and started rerunning numbers, remaking charts, tweaking explanations again. Took way longer than they thought — about 1 hour 20 minutes — plus multiple rounds of checking. Fix one spot, numbers jump somewhere else, have to open the old file to compare. So confusing, seriously confusing. Some coworkers were looking at me like I’m slow, even though they knew I stayed late last night to clear this.
This report is important and I want it to be right, but being squeezed like that makes mistakes way more likely. Not fair. I’m tired — I’m 42, not a kid who can just take every last-minute emergency from one person’s decisions. What if I mess up? Who’s responsible then? Or am I overthinking it?
I want to keep the work standard, but I don’t want to always be the one sprinting to fix everything. Maybe we should set priorities before sending — like mark what’s urgent and what can wait, and have the boss sign off on the crucial parts first. But how do I say that without sounding like I’m defying orders? Do I soften the wording, or give him numbers like “this will take at least 2 hours for a proper check”? Would that be okay?
Anyone on PANTIP ever deal with this? Give me advice. How should I talk to the boss so he understands time’s tight but doesn’t think I’m refusing? Is it good if I propose a prioritization with the team right away? And if you think I’m too soft, tell me straight up haha.
P.S. First time posting a thread here, sorry if I did anything wrong T_T
Boss ordered a full rewrite the night before it's due but gave like zero time — what do I do?
