So this all started when we moved into a tiny rental in Nonthaburi. We only got married three months ago — everything was rushed 'cause of budget — we finished the ceremony just fine and then moved into this small place we’re renting in one of the Nonthaburi neighborhoods. The wedding hadn’t even cooled down and I started noticing these little things I never thought would become issues in married life. The main character here... my husband. hahaha
At first it was kind of funny. Like he saves every receipt — from the grocery store, from the little street food stalls, the wax-paper wrap from his favorite curry shop. He puts them in a small box and keeps a little notebook where he writes how much he spent, what day, what he ate. I saw it and thought wow, super organized. But when I offered to help sort or throw some away, he got protective. He said it’s a sign of responsibility and it’s for emergencies.
Awkward silence.
There’s another thing I didn’t expect after getting married: he keeps cash in a jar under the kitchen cabinet. That’d be cute if it’s an emergency stash, but the problem is he never tells me what it’s for. He takes it in and out late at night a lot. I asked once and he replied kind of spaced-out, “just moving some weird cash around” and laughed. Still felt weird because I take care of the bills — utility, rent — I pay vendors through the account every month, but seeing that cash made me feel shut out of decisions about our little home.
Some nights he sneaks out around 8pm saying he’s just stepping out to buy something and comes back with small snack bags here and there. I asked and he said he wasn’t far, but I found the exact same snack bag three or four times in the cupboard. Not a big deal right? But it made me feel like he has parts of himself he doesn’t want to show me. Maybe he wants private space we don’t mess with, but am I being too nosy?
I work as a shop staff at a mall not far from home. Some days I talk so much I lose my voice, some nights I get home after ten, I’m just tired and want the house to feel safe and clear. These weird little things make me uneasy. When I try to handle it, he calls me sneaky — once I even took the cupboard key to check what was inside just to see if it was nothing. That felt like invading his privacy. He got a bit angry but didn’t explain why it was wrong; his face was just... annoyed.
I’ve tried calm talks many times, saying I want to know about our finances so we can plan buying essentials and save, but he calls me picky or overthinking and says relax, chill out. I try to, but when small things happen again the tension returns. He talks less, goes quiet, and that makes me worry that I’m not part of his private world.
Sometimes I wonder if I’m too hung up on transparency. Part of me laughs that people should be allowed to keep some things to themselves. But small secrets keep turning into this blinking cursor that underlines distrust. I don’t want tiny things to ruin the home vibe, but I also don’t want ambiguity to fester into something big.
Honestly I’m scared these small things could grow — like maybe he has small debts he won’t tell me about, or a habit of hiding expenses to spend on his own, or worse, there’s a lot I don’t know. I don’t want to poke around and ruin our laughter every night, but I need clarity to plan our life together — budgets for repairs, utilities, saving to buy a small place later.
I’m so confused T_T or am I just being naggy? Why the secrecy? Why not be straightforward like life partners should? I don’t want him to change into someone else, just want him to open up about why. Maybe it’s nothing, just a personal quirk that can be adjusted if we talk nicely.
Have any of you had a partner/husband like this? Should I have one big direct talk or bring it up little by little playfully to avoid nightly fights? But also, I really want clear answers for peace of mind. What should I do? Sorry if this is jumbled, I’ll update later.
Married but still baffled by my husband's habits in our new place — what do I do?
