This happened this morning, actually around 9:15. I was wandering through a flea market in Pattaya and peeked at some small bags the seller had. My phone blew up — my partner calling, asking me to transfer the utility bill money this time because they'd just hit an emergency air-con repair and had relatives visiting their parents' house. Hurry up or it'll be tough, they said. I was fine with it, transferred everything, done in about five minutes. But then this afternoon, around 3pm, I checked our account again and saw almost ten thousand baht gone, plus a bunch of little transactions I didn’t recognize that added up to a pile. Turns out they’d been putting away a hundred here, two hundred there for maybe three months.
They said they were saving it for emergencies, doing it on their own, and told me not to interfere because they had it organised.
I was totally baffled. Went quiet. Had no idea how to start the conversation.
I’m 38, a school teacher in Chonburi. We’ve been married nearly three years. We have a small joint debt but we planned for it, we do a little budgeting, but it’s obvious our money management habits are completely different — I keep receipts, I write stuff down, I have a little notebook and a green pen on my desk. I like seeing the numbers lined up, clear. They like keeping cash in a drawer or a bag and forgetting to tell me, and they have these tiny expenses they squirrel away over months until it becomes a lump. Then when something actually needs to be paid, they tell me like it’s some dust-bomb I hadn’t seen coming.
I’m surprised and kinda secretly annoyed, because if it was a big thing why not talk to me first? Am I overthinking, or should I just take over handling all the finances? I don’t want to order them around, but I’m afraid that if we don’t share info it’ll blow up when a real emergency hits — and if they have problems, won’t they feel judged? Like… how do I talk so it doesn’t hurt their feelings but still makes our finances clearer?
What do you guys think? Should I set a time to talk — like tonight after work around 7pm — sit down with hot tea and that little glass jar of coins and slowly bring things up bit by bit? They might be embarrassed or scared. I want a way to say this without hurting them but still get a clear outcome.
P.S. OP doesn’t want a big scene yet, just needs a real solution T_T hahaha
Married to someone who squirreled away small amounts — will it eventually explode?
