We've been married 3 years. We live in a house, just my husband and me, about 20 minutes from his parents' place.
Since last year, my father-in-law started coming over every Sunday. At first I thought he was just visiting his grandchild — we have a 2-year-old.
Over time the pattern became clear. Arrives at 9 AM, stays until 5 or 6 PM. Every single Sunday. Never calls beforehand. Never comes with my mother-in-law. Always alone.
My husband says, "Dad's lonely, mom goes to temple on Sundays." I get it.
But. Sunday is the one day we have to rest as our little family. Now every Sunday I have to wake up early, tidy the house, cook 3-4 dishes, host all day.
I told my husband I wished his dad would call first, or take a Sunday off now and then. My husband replied: "How can I tell him no? He's old."
So I keep smiling and welcoming him every Sunday. But inside I'm exhausted. It's been a year of this.
My father-in-law shows up every Sunday — never calls first
