I'm the man in the middle, between my mom and my wife. Right now is the most stressful moment of my life.

Our wedding was 2 years ago. From my side: dowry + 6 baht of gold. Everything went to my wife to keep, because by tradition it's hers.

My younger brother is getting married next month. The bride's side asked for 8 baht of gold. My mom doesn't have cash — only 4 baht of gold she'd been saving.

Last week my wife opened the safe. 4 baht of gold gone. Only 2 baht left. She called me over. We were shocked, thought we'd been robbed.

I called my mom. She answered casually: "I took it to sell for your brother's wedding. I'll pay it back within the year."

Didn't ask permission. Didn't tell us in advance. I have no idea how she even opened the safe.

My wife cried all night. She said, "He took my things without me knowing. Did I marry into a thieves' house?"

Whatever I say is wrong. Defend my mom — my wife is hurt. Defend my wife — my mom gets angry. What do I do?
