So this happened and... I'm totally bewildered. I don't even know how to start. Everything was fine and then I just stumbled onto it and my head went blank. It was like 4 AM, I was half-asleep holding a small paper coffee cup because I woke up to pee, saw a screen flash and, dumb move, I picked up her phone. Then I saw withdrawals that weren't in her main account — there was another backup account she’s been topping up all the time and never told me about.

I literally stopped breathing for like 10 seconds. My brain went totally empty, like a movie scene cutting away.

I'm 38, work at a factory in Phuket, dirty job, tired every day, come home hungry and sleep. I just want a normal life, but yesterday my whole private world collapsed.

My wife (we've been married 3 years) is a hard worker. She helps pay some bills sometimes, likes cooking, but when it comes to money... she has zero organization. It's crazy, seriously.

When we got married I’d saved up a bit and thought it was fine to share things, but after almost three years I started noticing weird signs — delivery receipts, clothes, cosmetics, all under her name, bought a lot, like monthly. Some months she transfers 2–3k to friends even though that month we could barely survive the water and electricity bills. I almost passed out, I don’t even know how to describe the feeling.

I shouldn’t have snooped, yeah, but I did and it was obvious.

I tried to forgive in my head, telling myself maybe it’s her money. But the amount and the secrecy felt like a betrayal. She never mentioned this account, never said she had a special goal or was saving it for emergencies. She just topped it up, spent from it, acted like nothing happened.

First night after finding out I couldn't sleep. My head kept running loops, thinking the same things — if she had told me earlier I would’ve been mad, I wanted to drive far away, but I knew that wouldn’t fix anything. After thinking and thinking I cried like a grown-up a little bit hahaha T_T

Next morning I went to work, masked up like always, but all day my mind was on that account. I talked to a trusted coworker who told me to talk to her straight up — not break into the house or snoop through her phone again — because I don't want to be that controlling partner.

When I got home it was quiet. She looked confused by my sudden mood change. She asked what was wrong. I snapped a bit, ready to explode. She got defensive and argued it was her money, personal spending, she wanted something that was hers.

I get that, but shouldn’t “something of her own” be talked about? Right? Is that just a personality thing or is it distrust of me?

She said she didn’t lie but didn’t want me to worry about little things and brought up that I paid most things when we married. She felt guilty and said if she’d told me back then I’d have been angry so she kept it to herself. Sometimes she even sent money to her mom without telling me because she was afraid I’d worry about the future. It all sounded so contradictory.

We talked until 1 AM, both exhausted, talking in circles, apologies, self-defense. I keep asking myself if I can accept this. Is secret finances a breach of honesty, or am I just freaked because I don’t know her well enough, or am I being overly paranoid?

I'm thinking about making new money rules — separate accounts clearly divided, or talk every time there’s a big transaction, or allow some private space but agree to disclose at a certain limit, or get a counselor. I don’t know about law or finance at all.

Sorry if this is messy, but friends who’ve been through this, please share what you’d do. Should I forgive and start over, or set a strict new agreement about joint/personal accounts, or give it time and adjust slowly? I feel like something important was hidden from me, but I don’t want to destroy my family over this one thing.

P.S. If anyone has real experience with this, please share. I’d be super grateful.
